Since we have had such a wonderful and extended spring this year in DC, we have been outside a lot on the weekends doing general landscaping. We found that James loves to be outside and he loves to play in the dirt. We got James his own little spade, which he calls his “digger” or his “dig.” He loves to take his dig out and use it to move the dirt. His other favorite job is to pick up rocks. I told him that Grandpa Johnny could use him on the farm!
We got an especially cute video of James digging from about a month ago. Enjoy!
James is now at an age where he thinks that he no longer needs a nap. Sometimes, he actually does power through the day, only to be a cranky mess come evening. On the Sunday before President’s Day, James did not nap. However, he fell asleep that night at 7 pm, about 2 hours before he normally does. On President’s Day, which was Daddy’s day off from work, he woke up at 4:30 AM. That was awesome.
Fast forward to 8am, and I was running out of ideas to do with James. I was very tired, and wanted to stay busy so I wouldn’t think about how sleepy I was, and I wanted to keep James entertained so he would not get bored and cranky. So, I decided to bake cookies with James.
I believe this was the first time that he helped do any baking, and I think it was my first time making cookies from scratch. As you can see from the pictures below, we had a great time. And, keeping busy kept me from feeling quite so tired.

The bowl also doubles as a hat, and a nice one at that.
Until James turned two, we never realized that our house is close to the flight pattern for Dulles airport. About every 3 minutes, a plane comes from east to west. James loves watching the airplanes. He always yells out, “Airpane!” and watched it fly across the horizon. Sometimes, now, he adds descriptions, such as, “airpane in clouds.”
With this new found interest in airplanes, we took James to the Smithsonian’s Air and Space museum out by Dulles airport. It is where the extra planes are stored that aren’t at the other museum at the Mall. Plus, it is a huge airport hanger that kids can run around in.
James absolutely loved it! He started yelling “airpane, airpane, airpane,” as soon as we walked in. He probably said “airpane” 200 times. We got to see the space shuttle, the Enola Gay, and a SR-71 plane among others.
Below is a quick movie from Abby’s iphone showing James’ excitement.
We also went to the top of the observatory, 7 stories up and watched the planes land.

After all was said and done, we went to the McDonald’s on site, and ate our packed lunch. We did spring for some ice cream, which James scooped into his mouth like a shovel. He was a little dazed, but after his sugar intake, he was ready to keep yelling “airpane.”

We also got to see the space shuttle from the ground and from up above.
